Why is Experiential Learning Effective | DIS EDGE

When we talk about experiential learning we often consider it as a part of the university and a pattern of learning that is often followed by scholars and researchers. The reason behind this is that qualitative experiential learning comes from making students involved in real-life experiences and immersing them in those situations that would make them challenge and engage in the problems themselves. This enables them to get to the core of the problem and learn everything precisely from the whole experience. The concept of experiential learning is an old idea received from Aristotle in the year 350 BCE.

It can specifically be characterized as - Learning that you acquire through the reflection of what you do. DA Kolb defined the experiential way of  “learning through reflection on doing.” The cycle of experiential learning starts with a few basic steps and they are -

  1. The first stage is the concrete personal experience which provides them with the experience itself through which they can learn about the perspective of the idea and also acts as the very basis and leading part through which they do the next step of the whole process.

  2. The second step is reflective observation, in which the learners start to introspect about their experiences and wonder if the whole event has been successful or not.

  3. In the third step, The abstract conceptualization stage, the learners figure out what else could be done differently the next time when they go through a similar experience or solve a similar problem.

  4. The final and last step is the active experiments where they generate their own ideas to solve similar problems, and draws their own conclusion.

While the four stages of experiential learning might sound like an easy process and a fantastic idea to let every child immerse into the subject topics and sync the ideas into their mind with full insights about the topic they are learning, it also turns out to be a daunting task for the teachers and especially to engage all the middle schoolers into this inclusive way of learning. But we at DIS Edge, have been effectively carrying out the experiential way of learning to create a deep impact on our student’s minds about the knowledge and the education we impart to them.
